Did you know that a Geothermal Heating and Cooling (GeoHC) installation in your service territory not only saves the member/consumer money each month, but also gives multiple savings and benefits to the utility itself?
GeoHC technology is uniquely suited to help meet many of the challenges facing electric utilities today.
- Peak Demand Issues caused by extreme weather events, nationwide electrification efforts, and the rise of large-scale energy consumers like data centers.
- Need for more capacity on the grid to meet growing demand.
- Rising costs of power generation that gets passed down to the consumer.
Geothermal Heating and Cooling account for roughly 60% of the energy consumed in a building (electric systems only). Unlike other HVAC technologies, GeoHC can meet this need and not become a burden to the grid when it matters the most.
The Utility Margin Calculator helps demonstrate the value each unit adds, showing you that a strong installation program is a win-win for everyone.
Below are three versions of the calculator that will walk you through the process of understanding just how powerful GeoHC technology is when deployed in mass.
Quick Estimate
Enter the number of GeoHC units to see a simplified estimate of annual demand savings and projected utility margins.
Quick Estimate Results
This simple calculator allows the user to get a valuable preview of how impactful even one ground source heat pump system can be on a utility’s financial situation and grid. No information other than the number of units already installed in your service territory is needed and you will see the benefits to be gained from demand savings and increased revenues. The calculations used to generate these numbers are based on averages of demand costs throughout the nation.
For a more accurate calculation that uses your own utility’s numbers, go to the Level 2 Calculator.Â
Utility Margin Calculator – Level 2
Enter information that is specific to your utility and its GeoHC program.
New Margins
Projected utility margin growth across deployment scenarios.
| 1 | 500 | 1000 | 2000 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New 10 Yr. Margin | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| New 20 Yr. Margin | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| New 30 Yr. Margin | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
Annual Demand Cost Reduction
Comparison of current demand cost and demand cost with GeoHC across deployment scenarios.
| 1 | 500 | 1000 | 2000 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current Demand Cost | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Demand Cost with GeoHC | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
30 Year Demand Cost Reduction
Long-term demand cost impact comparing current demand cost, GeoHC demand cost, and total savings.
| 1 | 500 | 1000 | 2000 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current Demand Cost | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Demand Cost with GeoHC | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Savings | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
This calculator is more advanced than the simple version. Instead of entering the number of units installed, you will enter information that is specific to your utility and its GeoHC program. The resulting graphs will demonstrate the value each GeoHC unit has in demand savings, increased revenue, and overall margin effects. Instead of relying on national averages, you are seeing the impact on your utility using your actual numbers.
If you want to see how you can pay for this program annually, go to the Level 3 Calculator.

This is the complete version of the GeoHC – Utility Margin Calculator. It requires all the information requested in the Level 2 Calculator with a slight addition…the total amount of kWhs sold annually and the amount of investment you have made (or will make) in your incentive program annually. The purpose of this calculator is to show one method of paying for your program. This ‘rate-rider’ method is based on the same program used at many cooperatives for various purposes and it allows the user to completely fund the GeoHC program annually or for however long you desire. This is not the only method of funding, but rather one that has proven highly successful.

The three calculators shown are best suited for distribution level electric utilities. G&T utilities have other variables and goals that are not necessarily reflected in the inputs and results of the calculators.
The use of these calculators is meant to demonstrate the possibilities inherent in promoting a robust geothermal heat pump program in an electric utility’s service territory. To keep the process simple, some assumptions are made in the variables used in the calculations, as well as averages and generalizations in industry data and utility situations.
