Starting or Improving a Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) Incentive Program Guidebook

This guidebook is meant to provide the sponsoring utility (electric, gas, water)
with information on how to start a new geothermal incentive program or give
ideas to the utility that is looking to enhance or change their existing program.
Much of the information contained in this document is based on successful
programs at numerous utilities around the nation.
GeoExchange is here to help and has individuals on staff with years of experience.

We can assist you directly or put you in contact with other utilities that are
running successful geothermal incentive programs.

Incentives

GHP Incentive Tools

A well-managed GHP incentive program is vital to get systems installed that are properly designed for your member, as well as one that will meet the goals your program has set.

The GHP Sizing Validation Calculator (designed by IGSHPA), is one tool that will make this job easier.  Enter the appropriate information and you will get a simple answer to whether the equipment is sized properly or not.

Geothermal Program Incentives
‘Think Outside the Box’

Electric Cooperatives have been incentivizing geothermal heat pumps for decades and have developed a variety of programs to help boost the adoption of the technology.  The incentives you will see in this document take things a step further than a basic (but still very effective) dollar amount per unit or ton.  If your cooperative is just starting a program or looking to enhance or change what you have, take a look and see what might work for you.

Inflation Reduction Act

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 introduced a variety of financial incentives to encourage energy-efficient home improvements and the adoption of renewable energy technologies. These incentives aim to help homeowners save money on energy costs while reducing their carbon footprint.

How to Take Advantage of the IRA Savings

  • Check eligibility: Many programs depend on your income and the specifics of the project.
  • Work with certified contractors: Some rebates and credits require installation by certified professionals.
  • Keep receipts and documentation: Save invoices, product specs, and certifications for tax filing or rebate claims.
  • Plan upgrades strategically: Take advantage of annual caps and spread projects over multiple years to maximize savings.
